Every new year is exciting, but as we turn the page to 2025, this one is particularly special for us.
The year 2025 marks 10 years since bunny.net embarked on a mission to help anyone accelerate, optimize, and secure their web applications. It was our goal to bring exceptional tools into the reach of every website owner, not just large enterprise companies.
When we started out, CDNs were rare and few. Those that did exist were complex, expensive, and almost exclusively focused on serving the enterprise market. Alongside bunny.net, other companies were born to help democratize access to these tools, but gradually, one by one, most dropped their original mission and shifted focus on chasing large enterprise contracts.
While much has changed since then, the CDN industry has reached a full circle. With the focus once again shifted away from developers, our mission today seems more relevant than ever.
To understand what led to this, let’s look at the current state of the market.
The state of content delivery today
The content delivery market is often painted as having enormous growth potential. However, what’s less immediately obvious is that a large part of that growth comes from just a few key companies like YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Steam, TikTok, and other large streaming and gaming companies. These platforms ingest and deliver a staggering amount of data and, in fact, represent the bulk of all internet content consumption.
These massive companies present tempting growth opportunities that look great on paper but, in reality, present a very dark side for the infrastructure companies chasing these deals. The results of this became clear last year as multiple large CDN players were forced to exit the industry.
So what happened?
In pursuit of massive growth and lucrative deals, nearly the entire CDN industry became laser-focused on winning these huge enterprise contracts, but once the enterprise market reached saturation point, growth slowed down. For perspective, after their recent bankruptcy, it was revealed that 70% of Edgio’s revenue, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, came from just 20 clients.
What didn’t slow down were their costs. To reach cost targets for these massive deals, CDNs had to lock themselves into expensive, long-term contracts, banking for more growth to arrive, but due to market saturation, that growth never came.
The large investments needed to support these deals needed to be paid off, and to make matters worse, the biggest platforms gradually transitioned traffic away, and built their own internal infrastructure systems to save costs. Combined, these factors caused a hyper-competitive environment focused on winning over and retaining these big whale customers just to keep afloat.
For us, it’s sad to see this happen, but a clear sign that most of the industry has once again lost sight of what truly matters: helping hundreds of millions of website owners and developers out there build better internet experiences, and improving the internet as a whole.
While the rest of the industry continues to chase these huge lucrative deals, we are kicking off 2025 with an unwavering dedication to keep pursuing what we originally set out to do, and help everyone in the world have access to a next-generation of tooling to help them supercharge their online presence, instead of chasing these massive deals.
Ten years of helping the internet hop faster
Our journey began all the way back in 2015 with no massive budgets, no impressive funding rounds. Just $200 and a bold idea of building something exceptional and bringing it within reach of anyone.
After bootstrapping our way to millions in annual recurring revenue, we doubled down and closed our Series A funding round in 2021 with the goal of taking what we did well, and pushing it to the next level.
Fast forward to 2025, and we just launched our 7th product, welcomed our 82nd Fluffle team member, signed up our 55,000th paying customer, and hit an exciting milestone of serving over 1 million requests per second during peak time on an average day! (If you want to help us make the internet hop faster, we’re still hiring!)
It’s been an incredible journey in many ways. Some good, some bad, some painful, but most, absolutely fantastic. Throughout, one thing remained certain: year after year, our unwavering commitment to customer obsession and our core mission helps bunny.net grow better, bigger, faster and allows us to deliver impact on a whole new level.
While we love supporting clients of any scale, including many today who deliver tens of petabytes per month and enjoy our enterprise support plans and SLAs, we believe that the right path forward continues to be in creating the absolute best products in the world and focus on making them available to everyone.
That’s why we at bunny.net believe our original mission from 2015 is more important now than ever before.
However, what has changed for us since then is our understanding of what a CDN represents, which evolved into something much bigger.
From CDN to a global edge platform
When we started out, we saw CDN as the product: a way to help users affordably deliver and accelerate content. Being the core of what we did, we focused on building the absolute best version of a CDN we saw possible. The result today is one of the fastest global edge networks in the world, packed with powerful features, and reaching tens of millions of people around the world every minute.
As we’ve grown as a company, so has our vision of what we want to build. Today, we see the CDN not just as a product, but as an ultra-fast global edge network, and a foundation for building even greater things on top of.
Now, this network enables us to pursue a much bigger purpose: providing you with the next generation of products built on top of it to add security, analytics, computing, AI, and much, much more. All seamlessly integrated into a single, easy to use platform designed to deliver exponentially more value and help you build the internet of tomorrow.
We’re excited to say this is exactly our focus for 2025.
Helping you build the internet of tomorrow
Energized with the ten-year milestone, ambitious new vision, and an insatiable drive to continue building something truly extraordinary, we’re more excited than ever about jumping into the new year.
We have a busy roadmap ahead and many exciting things to bring you, some of which have been years in the making.
From major performance improvements to massive product launches, we can barely contain our excitement for what's coming next. The past ten years were about building the foundation. The next ten years are about unleashing its full potential.
Here’s a glimpse of some of the exciting new things we’re working on bringing you in 2025:
CDN performance, reliability, and logging update
We’re by no means shifting focus away from Bunny CDN. In fact, we’re doubling down on it, with a big performance update already slowly rolling out, significantly reducing 99 percentile response times and providing even better experiences for your users, along with improved reliability.
To help you better debug issues, we will also be introducing a new, origin error logging system with in-depth details of why requests failed to reach your origin, to help you significantly improve the observability of your origin systems.
Smart Early Hints
To boost website performance even further, we're launching Smart Early Hints this year. This feature intelligently works with modern browsers to preload the necessary page resources before the origin server even responds, improving average load times by up to 40%.
Bunny Shield: The next-generation of security
Getting rid of annoying captcha screens and bringing the next generation of security into reach of anyone, we’re excited to announce the nearing launch of Bunny Shield. It combines a next-generation WAF, advanced DDoS protection, bot protection, API protection, and more to help you from ever worrying about attacks again, all with just a few simple clicks.
Magic Containers: The next-generation of Edge Compute
Edge Compute can get notoriously complex and expensive. That’s why we developed Magic Containers, the best way to deploy applications globally. Powered by an AI provisioning engine, it works like magic to automatically optimize your deployments to hit the most efficient performance and cost ratio, while delivering exceptional performance to your applications. Running any Docker container, Magic Containers adds automatic global load balancing, multi-container pod support, health monitoring, auto-scaling, advanced networking, and much more, with a planned launch in Q1 this year.
Edge Database: Globally distributed SQLite database
Running applications at the edge is great, but you won’t go far with complex applications without a database to back them up. To help with that, we will be launching an ultra-fast, globally distributed edge database based on Turso’s SQLite around Q3 this year. Achieving millisecond query latency around the world, Bunny Edge Database helps you seamlessly build applications optimized for exceptional performance that run straight at the edge. Best of all, at a fraction of the cost of traditional managed databases.
WebSockets Support
To expand the scope of applications that bunny.net can help accelerate, protect, and optimize, we will soon be introducing WebSocket support. While WebSockets have already been available upon support request, we will now make them accessible with a single click of a button.
Burrow: Improved performance of uncached requests
Performance shouldn’t just end with caching. To help supercharge uncached requests, we built Burrow, a smart globally distributed network optimizer. Planned to ship in early Q2, Burrow performs smart origin routing logic by traversing our optimized network to deliver up to 40% improved response times globally, and automatically works around packet loss cable cuts, and provides further reliability during global network incidents to help you deliver exceptional performance for every request. Every time.
WordPress Smart HTML Caching
We’re all about performance, and there’s nothing faster than serving your website, statically cached just milliseconds away from your users. To help WordPress users achieve unparalleled website load speeds, we will be introducing a new feature to our WordPress plugin called Smart HTML Caching. It seamlessly integrates into your website and intelligently preaches all the pages onto our ultra-fast globally replicated SSD storage to serve your users from just milliseconds away.
Rabbit Hole: Inbound tunnels for Pull Zone origins
To help developers easily expose local applications to the internet with just a few clicks without forwarding ports, and help system admins run the highest level of security with no publicly exposed endpoints, we’re excited to introduce Rabbit Hole.
Planned to release later in the year, Rabbit Hole creates secure inbound tunnels, seamlessly connecting your applications to bunny.net’s edge network, and eliminates the need for complex configurations or exposing sensitive systems to the public internet.
Vector Database: Enabling AI use cases
We’re excited to share that we are developing a managed Vector Database service designed to unlock powerful machine learning and AI use cases. This product will leverage our globally distributed infrastructure to enable fast, efficient storage and retrieval of high-dimensional vector embeddings, supporting AI applications such as AI Assistants, Agents, RAG pipelines, and most other AI applications.
It will seamlessly integrate into our Edge Platform, delivering low-latency access to data and models and empowering developers to build intelligent, responsive AI applications with ease. Stay tuned for updates as we work toward bringing this to life!
S3 Storage API
Last, but most definitely not least for this list. We’re working very hard to make S3 API support available for Edge Storage this year. It’s been a challenging journey and one of our most requested features, but to pursue long-term scalability, we decided to completely re-architecture our Edge Storage and launch something even better with the goal of offering even more affordable pricing, better performance, and scalability in the long run. We don't have an ETA just yet, but we hope to share more progress soon.
And much, much more...
While these are just some of the highlights we have planned, we have many more exciting features and improvements in the pipeline that we can't wait to share with you throughout the year. From AI to better developer tooling and even more exciting updates to each of our products, we’re committed to following what we set out to do and continuing to try to equip you with the absolute best tools possible.
