Uploads power modern platforms, but they can also open the door to chaos. Think of us as the guard bunny at the gate, keeping threats out while letting your platform hop ahead.
Whether it’s a photo, a support file, or an archive, uploads are no longer optional, but every upload carries risk. That file could contain malware, ransomware or, in the worst cases, child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Traditionally, handling uploads has meant tough trade-offs. Building your own scanning system is complex and expensive. Keeping it updated against an evolving threat landscape drains engineering time that’s better spent on product innovation.
That’s why we built something better. Today, we’re excited to introduce upload scanning, part of Bunny Shield. With one toggle, you can block malware, ransomware, and CSAM at the edge, protecting your platform without slowing your team down. CSAM detection is available to everyone, while antivirus protection is included with Bunny Shield Advanced and higher plans.
The CDN advantage: security where it matters most
As a global content delivery network (CDN), bunny.net sits at the edge of the internet, where every request begins. Every day, we observe billions of requests and attacks in real time. This unique vantage point allows us to detect emerging threats faster than anyone working in isolation.
We’ve extended that intelligence to uploads. Instead of scanning files only after they reach your server, where threats can already take hold, Bunny Shield performs in-transit scanning at the edge. Every file is inspected before it can get inside.
The result is simple: harmful uploads never reach your infrastructure. They’re blocked before they can be stored, accessed, or executed. What used to be a reactive cleanup is now proactive peace of mind.

Protecting people, not just platforms
Viruses and ransomware are disruptive, but CSAM is on another level entirely. Even one instance on your servers creates catastrophic consequences: mandatory reporting, regulatory investigations, reputational damage.
Many providers treat CSAM detection as a premium feature, adding huge costs that make it unattainable for most companies. We believe that’s unacceptable. Protecting children online shouldn’t be optional. It should be the standard.
That’s why Bunny Shield includes CSAM detection in upload scanning for everyone, at no extra cost. By making this a core feature, we’re not just protecting platforms. We’re helping raise the baseline of safety across the entire internet.
Keeping upload chaos out of your burrow
When harmful uploads slip through, the damage can be immediate. A single malicious file can spread through systems, disrupt users, and compromise trust in your platform.
The risk doesn’t stop at malware. The presence of CSAM transforms a technical incident into a legal and moral crisis. These are not edge cases. They are real consequences that no company can afford to face.
The fallout is enormous and can lead to lost trust, derailed engineering focus, compliance escalation, and even the risk of losing your ability to operate.
Upload scanning stops problems before they reach your users. Instead of dealing with support tickets, incident reports, and late-night alerts, your team can focus on building new features with confidence, knowing every upload has already been checked and cleared at the edge.
Restoring focus to your engineering team
Your engineers should be chasing innovation, not chasing malware down rabbit holes. Yet when harmful uploads make it through, that’s exactly what happens. Incident response replaces innovation. Alerts spiral into noise. Momentum stalls.
Upload scanning keeps your team focused on building. We handle the complexity and risk at the edge so your engineers can stay where they’re most valuable: creating the features your users love.
Security without the price barrier
Other providers charge a small fortune for upload scanning, especially for CSAM detection. We believe that security should be accessible to everyone.
With Bunny Shield, every plan comes with free file scans equal to 1% of your clean traffic requests. From day one, that means you can scan hundreds of thousands of uploads each month at no cost.
For example, on our Basic (free) plan, you get 25 million clean requests, which now includes 250,000 file scans every month at no cost. If you need more, additional scans start at just $0.70 per million. Higher-tier plans scale up even further, so whether you’re just starting out or already handling millions of uploads, you’re covered.
Security shouldn’t be a luxury. We’re making sure it isn’t.
This is just the first step
Upload scanning lays the groundwork for what comes next. We’re already working on expanding the protection it provides.
Today, upload scanning uses hash-based antivirus detection to instantly block known malicious files, while CSAM detection relies on perceptual hashing (PDQ) to identify and flag known illegal content with precision. Soon, we’ll introduce advanced heuristic scanning to the Business plan, adding behavioral analysis capable of detecting zero-day and previously unknown threats.
We’re also building new content filters that go beyond viruses, analyzing file types, structure, and embedded data to detect things like adult material, policy violations, and other unsafe or unwanted content before it ever reaches your infrastructure.
Our goal is simple. We keep pushing the boundaries of what Bunny Shield can do so you can stay focused on growing your platform while we make the internet safer for everyone.
Making the internet safer together
At bunny.net, our mission is to make the internet safer, faster, and more accessible for everyone. Upload scanning is part of that commitment. By blocking malware, ransomware, and CSAM at the edge, we’re not just protecting your platform. We’re raising the standard of safety across the web.
